The Auvergne
The Auvergne encompasses much of the Massif Central and is perhaps the least known and most remote region of France.
There are two large and spectacular national parks located in this region of France - the dramatic Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne and the Parc Naturel Regional des Livradois-Forez. The Auvergne is entirely unspoiled and is the largest environmentally protected area of France.
The region's mountains are older than the Alps or the Pyrenees with volcanic activity starting here around 20 million years ago.
