Location
The property is situated near the village of Couesmes Vaucé, in the beautiful Mayenne countryside. This lively village has a bar and a small shop for essentials. The larger village of St Fraimbault is also nearby, a very pretty village of 640 inhabitants, set in the beautiful Normandy-Maine National Park where the countryside is largely farmland, chequered with fields and woodland and known as the ‘bocage’. The village is famous throughout France for its wonderful floral displays which have gained it the top place on more than one occasion in the national competition for the best in flowering towns and villages (similar to Britain in Bloom) and a flower festival which is held over a weekend each August. The village is also situated in the small appellation which is the home of poiré du Domfrontais, a delicious pear cider, produced only in this pocket-sized area of France.
There is a good selection of shops in St Fraimbault, including a small supermarket, a boulangerie, a butcher, a hairdresser, a local farm shop bursting with fresh, local produce (including the poiré) as well as a tabac/bar and a restaurant which has a good reputation. At the edge of the village is a leisure lake for boating, fishing and picnics and there is an arboretum close by. The coast is less than an hour away and places of interest such as medieval Domfront, Fougères, the Mont St Michel and St Malo are all within easy reach. The ferry port of Caen is about an hour away and Cherbourg a little further.
